FAMILY

Lauren is a 4th generation western Washingtonian. Lauren attended University of Washington, and
received her B.S. in Community Service and Public Affairs from University of Oregon. Lauren went on
to receive her Masters
Certificate in Women in Politics and Government from Boston College. Lauren
has been an integral part of the Hilltop neighborhood in Tacoma for the last 18 years, where she
resides with her husband Marcus, a minister and theatre director, and their two sons.


EXPERIENCE

Fair Housing Center of Washington
Lauren has been the Executive Director of the Fair Housing Center of Washington for 12 years. She is
responsible for ensuring the civil rights of citizens across Washington State by investigating
complaints of discrimination. She regularly provides leadership and information on housing concerns
in our community to the Tacoma City Council, as well as US Congressional leaders. Lauren is
responsible for all fundraising, personnel, and financial management of the organization, as well as
long-term strategic planning.

Pierce County Department of Aging and Long Term Care
For a number of years Lauren was an Ombudsman for Pierce County, providing information and
outreach to the community regarding long-term care issues affecting the most vulnerable in our
community—seniors and people with disabilities. In her capacity as ombudsman, Lauren was a
skilled mediator, bringing people with divergent points of view together to support common goals.

Somerville Cambridge Elder Care Services
At this facility, serving the social service needs of seniors, Lauren was responsible for allocation of
federal funds to various agencies statewide. She was responsible for managing all advocacy
activities and lobbying efforts regarding state and federal legislation, and was an integral part of
achieving the goal of passing the first statewide universal healthcare bill in Massachusetts.


EDUCATION

Lauren attended University of Washington, and graduated with a B.S. in Community Affairs and Public
Service from the University of Oregon. She later received her
Masters Certificate in Women in
Politics and Government from Boston College.


COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & OTHER EXPERIENCE

Lauren has always served her community. Whether through her work, or in her personal life, Lauren
has dedicated her life to improving the quality of life of those around her.
















OTHER INTERESTS

  • Lauren is an avid runner and cyclist who has run the Sound to Narrows and participated in the
    Seattle to Portland bike race.
  • Lauren is a Sunday School teacher who is working to restore historic stained glass windows
    in the church where her husband, Marcus, is the minister.
  • Lauren is a long-time supporter of the arts. She is currently the Vice President of the Stadium
    Choir Boosters, as well as costumer and house manager for the Lakewood Playhouse

  • Lauren sits on the boards of the National Fair Housing Alliance—where she
    oversees an 11 million dollar budget, Tacoma Pierce County Affordable
    Housing Consortium, Tacoma Pierce County Partners in Home Ownership,
    and the Home Ownership Center of Tacoma: organizations which work to
    ensure equal opportunity and a chance at the American dream of home-
    ownership for citizens in Pierce County and nationwide.
  • Lauren is a former President of the Hilltop Action Coalition who organized
    neighbors, block by block, to combat crime in the Hilltop neighborhood she
    calls home.
  • Lauren has received the 2005 Daisy Stalworth award, in conjunction with
    the Fair Housing Center HUD innovation award.
  • Lauren has received the Innovation Award from both The Equal Rights
    Center, and The Nonprofit Center
